Detailed Overview

The Bowflex family of fitness machines keeps on advancing, and the Max Trainer M9 comes in atop the M8 as the brand’s premiere trainer.

Fans of the trainer have long valued its ability to provide a low-impact, full-speed, High Intensity Interval Training style of workout. By combining the motion of the elliptical and stair stepper into one piece, the Max Trainer series eliminates a lot of the joint and tendon stress typically associated with hard cardio.

The M9 features 20 levels of resistance, generated by way of magnets and air, making for a workout any level of user can enjoy. The biggest switch from the M8 is the replacement of an included Samsung Galaxy Tab E 9.6 Tablet with a 10-inch HD Touchscreen. As with a growing number of the Bowflex fitness products, the M9 is designed to work with the JRNY Digital Fitness Platform. The interactive workout program provides workout routines, personalized fitness assessments, trainer-led workouts, virtual coaching, and and compatibility with streaming entertainment apps such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Hulu. The M9 comes with two months free of the program, with an subscription cost of $$149 per year, or $19.99 per month, to follow.

The machine itself measures 49.2 inches x 30.5 inches x 65.1 inches, and weighs 148 pounds. With four-grip handlebars, and heart rate sensors in the handles, as well as an included Bluetooth HR arm band, cardio output is easy to track. Oversized pedals, Bluetooth speakers, and a premium media rack round out the personalized touches that make the machine comfortable.

Elliptical fans are no strangers to the benefits afforded by a machine such as the Max Trainer M9. And a price of $1,999, it represents a good alternative to pricier models options such as the NordicTrack FreeStride Trainer FS10i at $2,499. While not bringing as many proverbial bells and whistles as the more expensive models, the Bowflex Max Trainer series is well-regarded for its overall performance and opertional efficiency.

  • Bluetooth speakers
  • Oversized and textured pedals
  • Premium media rack

The Bottom Line

The Bowflex Max Trainer M9 is a great value purchase considering the new unit is less expensive than the M8. With 20 levels of magnetic and air resistance combined, there’s little chance of a user outgrowing the machine. The JRNY Digital Fitness Platform represents a solid value compared to rival apps which are typically $29-39 per month.
